Depression and anxiety are disabling psychiatric conditions worldwide. Approximately 10-20% of older adults treated in primary care settings suffer from late-life depression (LLD) and/or late-life anxiety (LLA). Older adults are often undertreated and/or do not receive the appropriate treatment for LLD and/or LLA in primary care, due to the lack of available resources and high demands on the health care system. Evidence has shown that antidepressants are the first line of treatment for LLD and LLA in older adults, in primary care settings.
