Phosphate was taken up actively by Oscillatoria redekei and incorporated into poly- phosphate even without prior phosphate limitation. Under optimal phosphate supply polyphosphates were formed in the light and degraded in the dark, but under limitation they served as phosphorus source in the light. Nitrogen and carbon limitation led to an intensive polyphosphate production. Limiting phosphate concentration induced the polyphosphate- forming enzyme, polyphosphate kinase, causing an economical consumption of the stored phosphate
