The standard enthalpies of formation of LuNi5, Lu3Pd4 and LuPd have been determined by high-temperature direct synthesis calorimetry at 1477+/-2 K. The following values of Delta H-f(0), in kJ (mole atom)(-1), are reported: LuNi5, -30.0+/-0.8; Lu3Pd4, -98.4+/-2.2; and LuPd, -95.0+/-1.4. The results are compared with predicted values from the Miedema model and with a previous Value reported by Selhaoui and Kleppa for LuPd. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A
