In this paper, I explore the historical and theoretical relationship between orality and literacy as traced through the work of Eric Havelock, Walter Ong, Marshall McLuhan and Friedrich Kittler, and apply it to the traditional academic 'outputs' of the lecture and the viva. In the final part of the paper, I draw out this analysis and its application into the context of contemporary media culture, to explore orality as a new site of academic 'output' in terms of broadcast media, discussing the Paperweight Radio series and the Modulations: Broadcasting Research initiative
