This thesis is a study into control methods for permanent magnet synchronous motors used to power electrical submersible pumps in order to discover a solution, which combines simplicity in both design and end user operation. The objective is to discover methods to improve energy efficiency and the capability to withstand sudden changes in load torque. Permanent magnet motors have recently been increasing in popularity in electrical submersible pump systems due to their higher energy efficiency and longer lifespan in comparison to induction motors.
