Polyimide aerogels are desirable for many aerospace applications due to their high porosity, low density, low thermal conductivity, and superior mechanical properties. They have also been demonstrated as lightweight substrates for antennas since they possess very low dielectric constants, approaching one as density decreases. Increasing the flexibility of the aerogel would allow them to be used as conformal antennas for use on aerospace vehicles, leading to significant space and weight savings.
