Pierre MARSONE : The Khitan (Liao) dynasty : a double identity. In spite of its significance for history and arts, the Khitan (Liao) dynasty (907-1 125) is still misappreciated. This phenomenon has many causes, including political. Relations between the concept of "minority" and its neighbouring notion of "stranger" still lack in clarity. This article aims at starting a reflection on the relativity of the widespread pattern of the sinicization of "Barbarians" and illustrating how the founders of the dy¬ nasty combined their dual consciousness of Khitan and Chinese rulers.
