Xavier PAULÈS : Opium smokers in Guangzhou in the 1930s The abundance of sources concerning Guangzhou in the 1930 decade enable a detailed study of opium smokers population. The figures as regards their number is not so im¬ pressive ; they concentrated in certain specific strata of the population, especially male manual workers in the 25-45 age bracket. Women, young people and upper classes were not part of this phenomenon. Rickshaw pullers examplify best the epitome of the smoker at this period, and the study of this category of the population demonstrates the importance of opium consumption as an energizer to compensate physical exhaustion, but also as a major stake in the relationship between the pullers and their patrons -providers of ...
