As noted by W. von Humboldt one hundred and fifty years ago, the influence of Chinese writing has been so much exaggerated that it has, so to speak, "taken the place of the language." Yet discussions of the Chinese language have borne on such essential topics as the existence of a universal grammar and the relationship between language and thought. In contrast the Chinese script has given rise to a number of theories which have in common the erroneous notion that the Chinese script is indépendant from the spoken language.
