Capital punishment and violent crime in late imperial China : a preliminary statistical analysis. This study attempts a statistical analysis of a selection of legal records kept at the Number One Historical Archives in Peking and available in microfilm in the US. The author begins with a brief account of the workings of the revision procedure that culminated each year at the Autumn assizes. He then examines the spatial and temporal variations revealed by the sources. The main part of the article is devoted to measuring the apparently considerable impact of gender differences and family relationships on the nature and distribution of capital crime as it was reviewed at the assizes, especially in the mid-eighteenth century.Cet article tente ...
