The expansion of Christianity between Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages raises a number of questions : Where and under what conditions were the earliest places of Christian worship established ? What was the impact of this social and political phenomenon on settlement patterns ? Are major phases discernible ? While these questions can be answered fairly readily in highly populated urban areas, this is not the case for rural areas due to the lack of scriptural and archaeological information. Thus, for the period of the early Middle Ages it is difficult to understand the nature of the parochia, either as a community of the faithful or as a territory.
