Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), caused by the protozoan parasite Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum and transmitted to humans and reservoir hosts by female sandflies, represents a serious public health problem due to its continuous expansion to new areas and urban centers. In São Paulo (SP) state, Brazil, VL has a distinct temporal-geographic pattern dispersion, first appeared in the northwestern (NWSP) region, spreading in a southeastern (SESP) direction over time.
