Despite their low abundance, telencephalic interneurons demonstrate a great amount of molecular and electrophysiological heterogeneity, suggesting that they exhibit different functions within the circuit. Interneurons are commonly classified into distinct cell types based on their morphology, intrinsic electrophysiological properties, connectivity or molecular profile.
