The initial writing of Brazilian, Mozambican and Portuguese children: a study on the representation of phonological nasality

This study analyzes the graphic record of post-vocalic nasality used by children in written language acquisition and who speak different variants of the Portuguese language. Considering the theoretical divergences that involve vowel nasality in Portuguese, if formed by the vowel + nasal consonant structure, as postulated by Camara Junior (1979), or if it constitutes a property of the vowels (COSTA, FREITAS, 2001), this research seeks to investigate as children who share the same linguistic system, but of different variants, have represented phonological nasality. According to Miranda (2009a, 2011, 2018) and Rodrigues, Lourenço-Gomes (2018), the graphical representation of nasality is complex to the children in writing acquisition, since they present indexes of errors higher than other post-vocalic segments, such as fricatives and rotic. Thus, in order to discuss the relationship between vocalic nasality in the linguistic system and the spelling of Brazilian, Mozambican and Portuguese children, in view of the different theoretical proposals for nasality in Portuguese, this research has the following specific objectives: i. to describe the spelling used by Brazilian, Mozambican and Portuguese children to represent phonological nasality; ii. compare the graphical representations used for the spelling of vocalic nasality by the students. The samples of texts used for the research belong to the Bank of Texts of Acquisition of Written Language (BATALE) and correspond to Strata 3, 4 and 9. As a result of the analysis, the study shows that, although the linguistic varieties of the students have their specificities, nasality is a problem for children in acquiring the writing of the three nationalities, since they have not represented it as a bifonic structure. In all samples, both 1st and 2nd year, the type of error with the greatest recurrence was omission of nasal registration, especially in the medial position of words. The exception found in the research corresponds to the data analyzed in the sample of Portuguese class of 1 year, which present more errors in the final nasality spelling. Trabalhos como de Abaurre [1988] (2011), Miranda (2009a, 2011, 2018) e Rodrigues, Lourenço-Gomes (2018) apontam que o registro gráfico da nasalidade é complexo às crianças em aquisição da escrita, visto que apresentam índices de erros superiores ao de outros segmentos em posição pós-vocálica, como fricativas e róticas. Desse modo, a fim de discutir a relação entre a nasalidade vocálica no sistema linguístico e a grafia de crianças brasileiras, moçambicanas e portuguesas, tendo em vista as diferentes propostas teóricas para a nasalidade no português, esta pesquisa tem como objetivos específicos: i. descrever as grafias utilizadas por crianças brasileiras, moçambicanas e portuguesas para representar a nasalidade fonológica; ii. comparar as representações gráficas utilizadas para a grafia da nasalidade vocálica pelos estudantes. As amostras de textos utilizadas para a pesquisa pertencem ao Banco de Textos de Aquisição da Linguagem Escrita (BATALE) e correspondem aos Estratos 3, 4 e 9. Como resultado da análise, o estudo mostra que, ainda que as variedades linguísticas dos estudantes tenham suas especificidades, a nasalidade constitui um problema às crianças em aquisição da escrita das três nacionalidades, uma vez que não a têm representada como uma estrutura bifonêmica. Em todas as amostras, tanto de 1º quanto de 2º ano, o tipo de erro com maior recorrência foi o de omissão do registro da nasalidade, sobretudo, em posição medial de palavras. A exceção encontrada na pesquisa corresponde aos dados analisados na amostra das turmas portuguesas de 1º ano, que apresentam mais erros na grafia da nasalidade final. Os resultados desta pesquisa mostram que, para os estudantes em período de alfabetização, a nasalidade pós-vocálica constitui propriedade das vogais
