Le variant macroH2A contient un domaine amino-terminal typique de l'histone H2A, fusionné à un domaine appelé "domaine macro". A ce jour, trois protéines macroH2A ont été identifiées: macroH2A1.1 et macroH2A1.2 résultant d'un épissage alternatif et macroH2A2.
