A new personality scale measuring the extent to which an individual utilizes the defense mechanism of splitting was developed and validated. Named the Splitting Index (SI), this measure is based upon the writings of Kemberg (e.g., 1975) on self and object representations and the mechanism of splitting. The SI was developed over the course of six pilot studies and then validated during two additional studies, utilizing a total of 2401 subjects drawn from introductory psychology courses at the University of Texas at Austin. Factor analyses revealed a 24-item scale with three 8-item subscales, measuring the splitting of self, family, and others' images.
