Die Herkunft der germanischen Runenschrift ist nach bald 150 Jahren der Forschung weiterhin ungeklärt. Während die Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts populäre Griechisch-These heute in den Hintergrund getreten ist, halten sich die Präponenten der Latein- und der Norditalischthese die Waage: Die Latein-These ist communis opinio unter v.a. skandinavischen Runologen; die Norditalisch-These wird in erster Linie von Forschern vertreten, die mit den betreffenden norditalischen Alphabeten beschäftigt sind.
