Shared Cultural Space - Building a National New Music Culture

It is perhaps worth qualifying this discussion by mentioning that I am not an academic. Instead I have over a decade\u27s worth of experience in presenting, recording and representing Australian new music nationally on the ABC. So rather than providing scholarly insights into Australian new music, I am able to present an overview of some of the themes and strategies that are or have been pursued in the development of shared cultural narratives and space for new music culture in Australia as I have experienced these through a position of practical advocacy for new music throughout my professional career. The new music scene I know best by far is the one I grew up with on the other side of the continent in Sydney. For the last 11 years in my work at the ABC I\u27ve had an unusual opportunity to gain a good overview of the new music culture across Australia, both in its self-similarities, and in the very real differences that exist between our geographically separated state capitals and the music worlds they\u27ve fostered
