Sound Within Sounds

This paper is an expansion on ideas discussed in the format of an artist talk/Q&A with Dr Cat Hope at the 2011 Totally Huge New Music Festival Conference. The discussions focused on my commissioned piece Mothlight (2011) for Decibel, as well as influences on my work and projects, including my time in Berlin with composer Peter Ablinger. When noticing that Immanence was the theme of the festival conference, I couldn\u27t help going to the dictionary: \u27Existing or operating within; inherent·. 1 It made me automatically think of most music, film or art that attracts me, including Gosia Wlodarczak\u27s drawings, Stan Brakhage\u27s short films and Peter Ablinger\u27s \u27rauschen\u27 or white noise works. I am influenced by any work that embodies some level of depth allowing things to come out from within it, over time, often things that are created purely by our own imaginations. These art forms that encourage our individual perceptive inquiry, without prescribing an associated and pre-formed meaning, interest me the most: anything assisting in creating a situation that calls for one to interpret new things behind it, or within it; a situation where the listener in some way becomes co-creator
