PhDEMBARGOED UNTIL 01/06/2014Leucite glass-ceramics are widely used in Dentistry, and show favourable aesthetics. Undesirable brittle failure however, is associated with uneven leucite crystal distribution, and the thermal mismatch between the glass matrix and larger leucite crystals. This thesis focuses on glass design and leucite microstructural control in order to produce high strength, aesthetic, reliable and processable leucite glass-ceramics. Glasses were designed using Appen Factors to control the thermal expansion coefficient, density and refractive index.
