Carl S. Auerbach World War II letters, MSS.4202

Abstract: Letters from this WWII sailor to his wife and family.Scope and Content Note: Over 530 letters, primarily from Auerbach to his wife Ruth Shedlarz Auerbach, written - almost daily - while he was in the US Navy during World War II. There are a few post cards from him to his in-laws, as well as incoming correspondence to Ruth from other friends and family. There is a pencil sketch - presumably of Auerbach in that he sent it to Ruth with the note "Done by 'one of the boys'. What do you think of it?" (May 10, 1945) and also a small "photo booth" size photograph of a young woman that is possibly Ruth. There are also several poems written by Auerbach included.Biographical/Historical Note: Carl Stanley Auerbach was born in New York on April 14, 1913, the child third child and second son of Stanley and Mae Auerbach. He married Ruth Shedlarz on October 10, 1940, and served on the U.S.S. Wildcat during World War II. He died in November 1980
