Abstract: Notebook containing a roster and brief history of Company I of the Fourth Virginia Volunteer Infantry, a regiment formed by students enrolled at Washington College (later Washington and Lee University).Scope and Content Note: This notebook contains a handwritten roster and regimental history documenting the service of Company I of the Fourth Virginia Volunteer Infantry. Also known as the "Liberty Hall Volunteers," this regiment consisted of a group of students from Washington College (later Washington and Lee University) in Virginia. The history and roster are written on the first twenty-four pages of the notebook; the rest of the book is blank. The roster is approximately five pages long and lists the names, ages, and hometowns of the regiment's members. It also provides information about the death, capture, and transfer of members. The regimental history, presumably written by Captain James J. White after the war, describes the First Battle of Bull Run. The notebook also contains three newspaper clippings related to the death of Captain Hugh A. White, who died at the Second Battle of Bull Run.Biographical/Historical Note: The Liberty Hall Volunteers was a Confederate regiment created in June 1861. Consisting primarily of students from Washington College (now Washington and Lee University), the volunteers were assigned to the Fourth Virginia Infantry Regiment, one of the five Virginia regiments which made up the Stonewall Brigade, led by General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. The regiment fought in many of the war's major battlefields, including Kernstown, Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and Chancellorsville. At the time of Lee's surrender at the Appomattox Courthouse in April 1865, the Stonewall Brigade was decimated, with only 210 of the brigade's 6,000 soldiers still in arms at the end of the war.Source: Rafuse, Ethan S.
