Abstract: The collection contains one diary kept by Donovan (Don) Hitch and his mother, Frances Hitch, documenting daily activities and events in and around Dry Ridge, Kentucky.Scope and Content Note: The collection contains one diary kept by Donovan (Don) Hitch and his mother, Frances Hitch, as well as miscellaneous correspondence and newspaper clippings found within the diary, documenting daily activities and events in and around Dry Ridge, Kentucky, such as weather reports and recreational activities. The section of the diary written by Don primarily addresses travels to Ohio, his work in a doctor's office, and his musical interests and accomplishments, and was written in the late 1930s through the early 1940s. The second half of the diary was written by Frances during 1953-54 and primarily addresses her daily housekeeping chores and the activities of her three adult sons.Biographical/Historical Note: Donovan (Don) Hitch was born on June 12, 1915, to Hugh and Frances Hitch of Dry Ridge, Kentucky. He had two brothers; Charles, born about 1919, and Billy, born about 1931. According to the donor, Hitch's father was a Watkins salesman and was known as "Doc Hitch." He was killed while in his car when it was hit by a train. Don Hitch played both the piano and organ, as well as taught music lessons.
