Abstract: Fragment of an illustrated German translation of Uncle Tom's Cabin.Scope and Content Note: The collection contains four pages from an illustrated German translation of Uncle Tom's Cabin.Biographical/Historical Note: According to Grace Edith MacLean in "Uncle Tom's Cabin" in Germany (1910), failure of social movements in the German Empire from 1830-1848 provided fertile conditions for reception of Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel. As of 1910, there were 75 distinct editions of the novel in German, including 11 abridgements for children. Presumably, most of these translations occurred in the decade following the original publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin in 1852
