The Portland Area Comprehensive Transportation Committee is seeking an $8,000 federal grant to research how many commuters would use a commuter railway or dedicated bus route that would run along a little-used stretch of rail connecting Westbrook and Portland. The rail line, which is owned by Springfield Railway Terminal, runs parallel to Route 25, one of the most congested routes in Cumberland County. The proposal for the commuter line came from Robert Wagner, a physicist, who along with others convinced the committee to request funds to research the idea.
