The state Bureau of Medical Services is responsible for recovering money spent by the state under Medicare on medical services which should have been paid for by a patient\u27s private insurance company. In 1993, the bureau recovered $10.3 million, making it tops in the nation. As a percentage of dollars recovered compared to expenditures, Maine\u27s recovery rate was four times higher than the national average and well above that of the other New England states
