The schooner Bowdoin, designed by William Hand and built by Hodgdon Brothers Shipyard in East Boothbay in 1921, made 26 expeditions to the Arctic Circle in the first half of the century, and in 1989 was designated a National Historic Landmark. The 88-foot Bowdoin, named Maine\u27s official sailing vessel in 1986, returned Monday from a 5,200-mile trip north of the Arctic Circle.
