The University of Maine at Orono on August 17 discovered another violation of National Collegiate Athletic Association rules in its athletic department, which could put the achievements of previous teams in jeopardy because of what is being called a misinterpretation. The NCAA requires athletes who have declared a major course of study to earn 24 credits toward that degree each year, but university officials counted all courses regardless of whether they satisfied degree requirements. The problem could affect athletes preparing to participate in this weekend\u27s opening games.
