Diesel exhaust is responsible for nearly one-third of the nitrogen oxide created on Maine\u27s highways, and diesel fumes have been linked to lung cancer, yet diesel-engine vehicles are not subject to Maine\u27s new emissions test. The Maine Lung Association is advocating testing diesels for emissions, but most diesels have virtually no emissions control equipment, making any test difficult. The federal Environmental Protection Agency is sponsoring research to develop new emissions controls and methods of testing diesel engines. Details, related article
