The Aquarium Development Corp., which is trying to bring a Gulf of Maine Aquarium to the Portland area, points to the role that aquariums have had in revitalizing areas in several cities, including Boston; Baltimore; Monterrey, Calif.; Corpus Christi, Texas; New Orleans; Camden, N.J.; and Newport, Oregon. The Tennessee Aquarium, in Chatanooga, which opened in May 1992, has had a noticeable impact on the city, and some aquarium proponents hold it up as a model for what an aquarium could do for Portland.
