A majority of Maine\u27s 126 shellfish dealers have not secured the licenses needed to sell clams, oysters and mussels because their operations do not meet the sanitation guidelines developed by an interstate shellfish sanitation conference. The state has begun to rigidly enforce the new guidelines, since non-compliance could threaten the $12.3 million-a-year industry. As of May 1, only six Maine shellfish dealers appeared on a monthly list that allows them to market their product in other states. Details
