The Legislature\u27s Judiciary Committee is currently considering a bill that would allow no more than two gambling casinos in the state, one for the Penobscot Indian tribe and the other for the Passamaquoddy Indian tribe. The bill would confine one casino to Calais and the other to a county with an unemployment rate of at least 7 percent, and the casinos would have to be at least 75 miles away from any Maine city with a population greater than 30,000.
