A law intended to eliminate a deficit in the state unemployment insurance fund will result in a $48.3 million increase in unemployment taxes for Maine businesses and a $13 million reductioln in benefits for unemployed workers. The bill passed both houses of the Legislature without debate and was signed by Governor McKernan the same day
