Article critical of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for awarding McGee Construction of West Gardiner a $200,000 no-bind contract to remove 1,500 cubic yards of contaminated soil from a location in Harmony, despite the fact that the company has violated environmental laws by clear-cutting the buffers of its Augusta gravel pit, eroding the banks of Kennebec River, violating air standards, improperly storing construction debris, and operating a quarry without proper permits. While DEP environmental specialist Chris Swan claims to know of no McGee environmental violations, Deb Garrett, a DEP spokesperson, confirms that there are at least five notices of violations currently in process against McGee.
