Wildlife advocates in Maine are applauding an announcement by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service that it might continue to protect Northeast timber wolves under the Endangered Species Act and will possibly add the Canadian lynx to the list. Maine has always had lynx and their numbers have always been low, despite the end of legal hunting in 1967. It is unclear whether the state has a breeding population of lynx or if they are wandering down from the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec. Nationally the agency\u27s wolf plan would withdraw protection for the timber wolves in the Northwest, while reclassifying them to threatened in the Northeast
