Maine voters on November 7 approved Question Three, a $15 million bond issue for new communications technology for schools and other public institutions. The equipment for secondary school hookups is likely to run on a Nynex fiber-optic network called Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), which could serve as the springboard for future developments in advance telecommunications statewide. ATM transfers video, voice and data rapidly, and schools could use the system for faster Internet access in the future. The Maine Public Utilities Commission this month will determine whether the School and Library Internet Infrastructure Program will be open to competitive bidding. Details
