Six abnormal frogs were discovered at the Sunkhaze National Wildlife Refuge in Bangor, out of 71 caught as part of a UlS. Fish and Wildlife Service study of frog deformities. One of the frogs had four hind legs, while others had missing toes and parts of legs. Some scientists suspect the abnormalities might be caused by environmental pollutants, while others say they may be caused by a trematode infection. The study was prompted by the discovery of a high number of abnormal frogs in Minnesota and Vermont
