The Maine Land Use Regulation Commission last month voted 4-3 against a proposed zoning policy encouraging the state to ban development in large areas of the north woods. Environmentalists voiced concern over the vote, which one land use consultant speculated was a result of LURC deciding it had gone far enough in imposing regulations on landowners. Jim St. Pierre of Restore: The North Woods expects the decision to increase support for a proposed 3.2 million-acre woods preserve and national park. The Natural Resources Council of Maine criticized LURC for failing to look out for the public interest. Details
