Seven Islands Land Company has managed 975,000 acres of Pingree family forest land in Maine for 30 years, and in 1993 hired Scientific Certification Systems of Oakland, Calif., to evaluate the timberlands. Certification as a well-managed forest allows a company to market their wood products for a higher price, due to the growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly goods. Scientific Certification has been certifying forests and wood products since 1991, and some are wondering if it is just a way to add ten percent or more to the price of the product. Details
