The Maine Department of Transportation has embarked on a $1 million project to install continuous rumble strips on over 350 miles of Maine highway, including all of the Maine Turnpike and most of Interstate 95. Studies from other states have shown that rumble can reduce running-off-the-road accidents by 20 percent to 50 percent. State highway officials hope the strips will jolt the estimated 30 percent of Maine drivers who fall asleep at the wheel each year out of their slumber before an accident occurs
