The Nahmakanta tract was purchased as part of the Land for Maine\u27s Future fund, and was supposed to be off-limits to all motorized vehicles. Millinocket-area snowmobile clubs sought to relocate ITS 86, a major snowmobile route, because of safety concerns, and the route will now cut through the southeastern section of the 9,200-acre Debsconeag Backcountry Area. Wilderness activist Charles FitzGerald criticized the decision to relocate the trail. Appalachian Trail officials supported the trail relocation with reluctance, but were happy that it will give greater protection to the nearby AT corridor. Details
