The Maine Public Utilities Commission ordered Nynex to spend $20 million over five years to connect the state\u27s schools and libraries to the Internet. Mount Vernon spent $10,000 to install computers in grade school classrooms, allowing the town to take advantage of Internet access. Jordan-Small School in Raymond has a computer-to-student ratio of 1:9, and some in the school would like to see the ratio at 1:2. The Portland Public Library last February offered Internet access to its patrons, and library director Sheldon Kaye is not bothered by dire predictions about the ill effects of the Internet on libraries.
