Cover Story piece on character education in Carol Pullen\u27s first-grade class at Benton Elementary School. Pullen teaches students traits like respect, self-discipline, cooperation and a positive attitude using a half-dozen giant, fuzzy primates called goodness gorillas. Maine\u27s new Learning Results requires that students learn good citizenship as well as the three Rs. Pullen\u27s students are ahead of the curve. But students throughout the rest of the state will soon begin learning ethics and values as well. Maine received a federal character education grant equaling $1 million over four years along with $50,000 in state funds. That money was awarded to 28 districts and several resource organizations during the last fiscal year
