Jerry Genesio of Portland, founder of Veterans for Peace, organized VFP\u27s Children of War project, which in 1993 began arranging evacuation for children injured in the fighting in the former Yugoslavia. The project resulted in 39 children receiving free medical care in hospitals across the United States, and Genesio\u27s efforts won him awards from Amnesty International and the Holocaust Human Rights Center of Maine.
