School Administrative District 40 has instituted Student Interviews, Searches and Arrests, an anti-drug program that includes random locker searches, body searches and the use of drug-sniffing police dogs. Tactics used under the program are similar to ones used at schools in Calais, Freeport, Naples, Milo, Oakland and Lawrence. Critics say schools are teaching students that its okay to treat kids as if they are guilty until proven innocent. School officials have more latitude in conducting searches that do the police, and some parents are unhappy with the situation.
