The Great Northern mill was established in 1907 and from the start was the lifeblood of the town of Millinocket. During the past decade, the workforce at the Great Northern facilities in Millinocket and East Millinocket has been halved, from 4,000 to less than 2,000. Another round of layoffs is expected to be completed at the end of this month. The loss of jobs has resulted in a loss of population, and the town is trying to decide if it should look to tourism instead of papermaking for its economic survival. Details
