Cover Story piece on the isolated village of Frenchboro on Long Island, off the coast of Mt. Desert Island. Last August, almost two thirds of the island was offered for sale by owner Peggy Rockefeller Dulany, threatening unprecedented change for the 45 inhabitants, who survive almost entirely off the sea. Maine Coast Heritage Trust was able to strike a deal for the 900 acres at a lowered price of $2.1 million. The trust partnered with the Island Institute and the Maine Seacoast Mission to conserve land, set aside land for future development, and to put aside money for renovations of community buildings and for an endowment to offset the loss of property taxes.
