U.S. Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt was in Maine this week to announce that the petition to list the Atlantic salmon under the federal Endangered Species Act has been withdrawn. Gov. King had threatened to sue if the salmon had been listed. The decision means management of the salmon will be left to the state, a move that is almost certain to prompt a lawsuit from Restore: The Maine Woods, which had originally petitioned to have the salmon listed.
