Cover Story piece on the 26 school-based health clinics (SBHCs) in Maine. Health centers like the one at Lincoln Academy offer flu shots, sports physicals, urine and blood tests, immunizations, medications, diagnostics and many other medical services. Students can get help with nutrition, reproductive health, weight management, relationship issues and substance abuse problems. According to Healthy Maine 2000: a Decade in Review, a report on the states\u27s progress toward goals established more than 10 years ago by the state Bureau of Health, teens and adolescents are the most medically underserved age group. Current funding for SBHCs is an assemblage of grants and gifts, mostly the state\u27s tobacco settlement and Medicaid reimbursement funding with some from the General Fund.
