The Chewonki Foundation in Wiscasset has been offering boat-building courses since the late 1970s, gradually changing the boat design and methods of construction. Students this year constructed kayaks, and paddled them 100 miles from Chewonki Neck to Mount Desert Island. The boats held up well under the abuses of 100 miles of ocean, surf and rock, and the students took home more than the kayaks that they constructed
